Activities and Assignments
Assignment ONE_Introduction to Photoshop
This lesson will get you acquainted with Photoshop. Note the similarities between Photoshop and Illustrator. Flip through the Digital Imaging Basics presentation to learn about file types and pixel math. Then, view each video to get acquainted with Photoshop. Especially important is the way the History Panel works in Photoshop.
We will spend several days working through some Photoshop lessons. Use the files downloaded in Assignment 1. Each day, we will open a few files to use in class. Follow instructions carefully. You will turn each file into a JPG and turn them in according to in-class instructions (your Portfolio). Videos are available below as well in case you miss a day of class.
THREE_Image Cutout Skill Drill
Think of this as a quiz. Grab a photo from the internet. The photo should have a person and a fairly plain background. You will need to cut the person from the background - leaving the background transparent. Watch the video below to introduce the activity. When complete, make sure you have saved the completed image.
Assignment FOUR_The Self Portrait Silhouette Collage
You will create a small collage of photographs that will fit inside of a silhouette of your own profile and shoulder area. We will start by shooting that photograph of yourself and turning it into a black silhouette.
FIVE_Ethical Image and Works Cited
Copyright sounds like a fancy legal term, but the fact is that anyone who creates something owns rights over that creation. If you take out your cell phone and take a picture on your next vacation, you are a copyright owner. There are more complex considerations at play. For instance, if you take a picture of a person, that person can retain some rights. Whether or not that person is in public also changes rights. Nonetheless, we generally own the copyright when we create a picture.
SIX_Composition and Deep Space Nine (TGJ3)
All of your silhouettes are rich in imagery that may not make sense to a casual viewer. Please write at least two quick paragraphs in a Google Doc that will explain your project to a viewer who doesn't know you or know about your project. Reference specific imagery in your collage when you write this.
